What is the role of myoglobin in muscle fibers? | The role of myoglobin in muscle fibers is to store oxygen, transport oxygen, facilitate oxygen diffusion and store iron so oxygen can bind. |
What is the difference between isotonic and isometric contractions? | Isotonic muscle tension in constant, the length of muscle changes, and there is joint movement. Isometric muscle length remains constant, there is tension with in the muscle, and there is no joint movement. |
What are the three main functional categories of neurons | Sensory (afferent) neurons-trasmit information from external environment or internally to the CNS. Motor (efferent) neurons carry signals from CNS to muscles, and other effector organs. Interneurons are connectors between sensory & motor neurons |
Name the three membranous coverings of the central nervous system in order, beginning with the outermost layer | 1. Dura Mater 2. Arachnoid Mater 3. Pia Mater |
List the three anatomical divisions of the ear. | Outer ear: pinna, external auditory canal. Middle ear: tympanic membrane (eardrum), and ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes). Inner ear: cochlea, vestibular system |
How are steroid hormones able to pass through a cell’s plasma mem-brane easily? | Simple diffusion: lipid bilayer permeability, diffusion through membrane, binding to receptors, formation of horomone-receptor complex, and gene activation |
What is the overall function of the lymphatic system? | Functions are fluid balance, immune system support, transport of nutrients and lipids, waste removal, maintenance of blood volume and pressure, denfense against infections and cancers |
Name the principal organs of the upper respiratory tract. Name the principal organs of the lower respiratory tract. | Upper respiratory tract: nose, nasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx. Lower respiratory tract:trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs, alveoli |
What is the difference between the pulmonary circulation and the systemic circulation? | Pulmonary circulation is the flow between the heart and lungs. Systemic circulation is blood flow between heart and rest of the body. |
Which type of body tissue produces the hormone leptin? | Leptin is primarily produced by adipose tissue, which is a type of connective tissue composed of fat cells (adipocytes). |
