basic anatomical terms to know.

Anatomical Position A relative standard position where the body is errect, head and toes face forward arms hanging at the side of the body with palms facing forward,.
Abdominal The anterior body trunk region inferior to the ribs
Antecubital The anterior surface of the elbow
Axillary The armpit
Brachial The arm
Buccal The cheek
Carpal The wrist
Cervical The neck region
Coxal The hip
Deltoid The roundness of the shoulder caused by the underlying deltoid muscle.
Digits The fingers and toes
Femoral The thigh
Fibular The side of the leg
Inguinal The groin
Mammary The breasts
Manus The hand
Oral The mouth
Nasal The nose
Orbital The bony eye socket (orbit)
Patellar The anterior knee (kneecap) region
Pelvic The pelvis region
Pubic The genital region
Sternal The region of the breastbone
Tarsal The ankle
Thoracic The chest
Umbilical The navel (bellybutton)
Fibular The side of the leg
Gluteal The buttocks or rump
Lumbar The area of the back between the ribs and hips; the loin
Occipital The posterior aspect of the head or base of the skill
Popliteal The back of the knee
Sacral The area between the hips
Scalpular The scapular or shoulder blade area
Sural The calf or posterior surface of the leg
Vertebral The area of the spinal column
Superior Above
Inferior Below
Anterior Front
Posterior Back
Medial Towards midline or median plane
Lateral away from midline or median plane
Cephalad Towards the head
Caudad (Caudal) Towards the tail
Dorsal Backside
Ventral Frontide (bellyside)
Proximal Nearer the trunk of attached end
Distal Further from the trunk or attached end
Superficial towards or at the body surface (more external)
Deep Away from the body surface (more internal)
Sagittal Plane Runs longitudinally down the length of the body, divides into right and left halves. (also called Medial place or mid-sagittal plane)
Frontal Plane A longitudinal plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior
Transverse Plane Runs horizontally dividing the body into superior and inferior parts ( these parts are often called cross sections)
Dorsal Body Cavity Consists of the Cranial and Spinal Cavities
Ventral Body Cavity Consists of the thoracic cavity, diaphragm, abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity
Cranial City Wishing ridged skull and contains the brain
Spinal Cavity Runs within the body vertebral column and protects the spinal chord (which is part of the brain)
Thoracic Cavity Separated from the rest of the ventral cavity by muscular diaphragm. The here and lungs are located here and are protected by the bony ribcage.
Abdominopelvic cavity Inferior from the thoracic cavity includes superior abdominal cavity and inferior pelvic cavity
Superior Abdominal cavity Includes stomach, intestines, liver, and other organs
Inferior Pelvic cavity Include the reproductive organs, bladder, rectrum, and body pelvis.
Umbilical Region The centermost region of the stomach includes umbilicus
Epigastric Region Immediately superior to the umbilical region: overlies most of the stomach
Hypogastric region (public region) Immediately inferior to the umbilical region: encompasses the pubic area
Iliac region (inguinal region) Lateral to the hypogastric region and overlying the superior parts of the hip bones
Lumbar region Between the ribs and the flaring portions of the hip bones: lateral to the umbilical region
Hypochondriac region Flanking the epigastric region laterally and overlying the lower ribs.
