Anatomical position Erect, feet on floor, facing observer with palms facing forward.
Supine Laying down, facing ceiling
Prone Laying down, facing floor
Anterior Font side, also ventral
Posterior Back side, also dorsal
Proximal Nearer to the center of the body or pint of attachment.
Distal situated away from the center of the body or from the point of attachment.
Medial Nearer to the midline
Lateral to the side of or away from the middle of the body.
Superficial Toward or on the surface of the body.
Deep Away from the surface of the body.

epiphysis the ends of a bone
diaphysis the middle part of the long bone.
metaphysis the part of the bone that is located in between the epiphysis and the diaphysis.
periosteum the connective tissue membrane that covers the bone.
endosteum the thin membrane that lines the marrow cavity of a bone.
osteocytes mature bone cells
lacunae small cavities of mature bone cells
cancellous bone a spongy structure that refers to bone tissue.
cortical bone the outer layer of bone
mandible lower jawbone
calcaneal heel bone
femur thigh bone, largest bone in our body
patella knee-cap.
tibia shin bone, larger bone of the of the two distal leg bones.
fibula smaller outer bone between the knee and ankle
calvicle collarbone
frontal bone front of the skull
temporal bone front and sides of skull
occipital bone back of skull
