What is the deepest layer of skin? The Hypodermis (Subcutaneous layer)
What is the thickest layer of skin? The Dermis
What is the outermost layer of skin? The Epidermis
Stratum Corneum Hard outermost layer of epidermis
Stratum Basale Produces new cells of epidermis
Langerhan Cells Immunity
Melanocytes makes pigment to give skin color
Keratin helps form hair, nails, and your skin's outer layer
Dermal Papillae ridges that cause fingerprints and provide gripping surface
Collagen and Elastic fibers stretching and movement
Adipose Tissue store energy, insulate body heat, and provides protective padding
The 5 functions of the skin - Protection - Keratinization - Produces Vitamin D -Gathers sensory Information -Regulates body temperature
Keratinization prevents water from entering or leaving the skin, even when immersed in water
Purpose of Vitamin D helps regulate the uptake of calcium by the digestive system
Purpose of receptors? They specialize in sensing. touch, pain, pressure, and temperature (hot & cold)
Normal Body Temperature 98.6 degrees
What are the signs of a hot body? the skin will release the heat
What are the signs of a cold body? The body will create goosebumps and shivering
Hypothermia lower body temperature than normal
Hyperthermia Higher body temperature than normal
