Text features

Text Features

TermDefinition
Table of Contents At the beginning of a book that list chapters and contents. Is in the order of pages go in and gives the page number of each topic.
Index At the end of a book. It alphabetically list all major ideas, topics, and names and which page number to find them. You use them when you need to go back and read in depth.
Glossary At the end of a book. List key terms and definitions. Good for quick use for a reminder of a term or when making flash cards.
Title\Heading At the top of a text. It is in some special font or bolder and maybe in a different color then all other fonts. Tells what you are going to read about.
Subheadings Divides reading into sections and is bigger or bolder than regular font to stand out from main text. But it is smaller than a title.
Photo\illustrations Real life or artistic representation of something to do with the text. It helps the reader picture swhat is going on and to understand the text better.
Captions A sentence or two under a photo or illustration the tells what is going on in the photo.
Maps/timeline/table/chart these are feature that are mathematical, scientific, or geographical information. They come in many different forms shapes or sizes.
Sidebar These have information that adds on to the main text. usually on the side of the text. It provides info that is interesting or helpful to the reader to understand the main text more.
