Reproductive systems
Parts of the female and male reproductive systems and their definition.
Term | Definition |

Vulva | Outer part of the female reproductive system, which includes the clitoris, the labia and the urethra. |
Vagina | Conduct that connects the outside (vulva) with the uterus. |
Cervix | Connects the uterus and the vagina and it changes its position due to stimulation of the clitoris. |
Uterus | Cavity where the fertilized ovum develops. |
Ovary | There are two of them. It contains hundreds of ovum. It releases hormones that develop secondary sex characteristics and one ovule each 28 days approximately. |
Fallopian tube | There are two of them. They connect the ovaries with the uterus. They are also called oviducts, |
Endometrium | The lining of the uterus. |
Clitoris | It is a muscle that due to friction, it activates the brain to cause changes to the body that facilitate fertilization. |
Labia majora | Large fleshy folds of tissue that protect the other external genital organs. They produce lubricating secretion. During puberty, hair appears on them. |
Labia minora | Pink fleshy folds inside labia majora that surround the vagina and the urethra. During sexual stimulation, they swell with blood and they are more sensitive. |
Penis | Sponge-like cylinder that becomes erect due to sexual stimulation, allowing for penetration during sexual intercourse. |
Testicle | There are two of them. They are oval organs that are protected by the scrotum. They make testosterone that develops secondary sex characteristics and produce sperm |
Scrotum | Loose pouch of skin that protects the testicles. It contracts to warm the testicles and it relaxes to cool them. |
Seminal vesicle | There are two of them. They join the vas deferens to form together the ejaculatory ducts that travel through the prostate. |
Prostate | Walnut-sized gland that grows with age. It produces seminal fluid. |
Vas deferens | Tube that transports the sperm from the epididymis. |
Urethra | It has a double function in males: it transports urine from the bladder to the outside and it also ejaculates semen. |
Glans | Cone-shaped end of the penis. |
Prepuce | Also called foreskin, it is a layer of skin that protects the glans. Some people get it removed in a process called circumcision. |
