Why is the sympathetic division of the ANS also known as the thoracolumbar division? The sympathetic division’s central neurons (preganglionic neurons) are located in the spinal cord segments T1 through L2. These preganglionic neurons extend from the thoracic (chest) and upper lumbar (lower back) regions of the spinal cord.
