Ovaries | The primary reproductive organs in females, responsible for producing eggs (ova) and hormones like estrogen and progesterone. |
Fallopian Tubes | Tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus; the typical site of fertilization. |
Uterus | A muscular organ where a fertilized egg implants and develops into a fetus; also known as the womb. |
Cervix | The lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina, playing a key role during childbirth and menstrual flow. |
Vagina | The muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus, facilitating intercourse and childbirth. |
Vulva | The external part of the female genitalia, protecting the reproductive organs. |
Labia Majora | The outer lips of the vulva, which enclose and protect the external reproductive structures. |
Labia Minora | The inner lips of the vulva, situated within the labia majora. |
Clitoris | A small, sensitive, erectile part of the female genitals, equivalent to the male penis. |
Ovulation | The process in which an ovary releases an egg, typically occurring once in each menstrual cycle. |
Menstrual Cycle | The monthly cycle of changes in the ovaries and the lining of the uterus, leading up to the shedding of the uterine lining and menstruation. |
Menstruation | The monthly discharge of blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus, occurring in the absence of pregnancy. |
Estrogen | A group of hormones that play an essential role in the growth and development of female sexual characteristics and reproduction. |
Progesterone | A hormone released by the ovaries that prepares the uterus for pregnancy and the breasts for lactation. |
Endometrium | The lining of the uterus, which thickens during the menstrual cycle in preparation for possible pregnancy. |
Fimbriae | Finger-like projections at the end of the fallopian tubes, which capture the released egg from the ovary. |
Bartholin's Glands | Glands located near the vaginal opening that produce a fluid secretion. |
Mammary Glands | The glands in female breasts that produce milk for breastfeeding. |
Hymen | A thin membrane that partially covers the external vaginal opening in some women. |
Fertilization | The union of an egg and sperm in the fallopian tubes, leading to the development of a zygote. |
Implantation | The process by which a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus to begin pregnancy. |
Pregnancy | The period during which a fetus develops inside the female uterus. |
Placenta | An organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy, providing oxygen and nutrients to the growing baby and removing waste products. |
Lactation | The secretion of milk by the mammary glands after childbirth. |
