Deep Further away from the surface of the body (deeper inside the body)
Midsagittal Plane or Median Plane Middle of the Body (body cut in half perpendicularly dividing the body into left and right)
Parasagittal Plane plane dividing the body that is parallel to the midsagittal plane
Frontal or Coronal Plane Middle of the Body (body cut in half perpendicularly dividing the body into front and back)
Transverse Plane Horizontal plane that cuts the body into upper/top and lower/bottom sections
Dorsal Cavity Cavity/Space that contains the brain and spine
Cranial Cavity Cavity/Space that holds the brain
Spinal cavity Long and narrow cavity/space that holds the spinal cord
Ventral Body Cavity one of the two main body cavities containing the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
Thoracic Cavity The cavity in the chest that is divided into three main parts: Pleural cavity, Mediastinum, and Pericardial Cavity
Pleural Cavity Cavity that holds the lungs
Mediastinum Cavity containing vital organs located in between the lungs
Pericardial Cavity Cavity that holds the heart
Abdominopelvic Cavity The cavity below the chest that is divided into two main parts: Abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity
Abdominal Cavity Cavity containing vital organs located below the diaphragm such as: stomach, liver, intestine, and kidney.
Pelvic Cavity Cavity containing vital organs below the abdominal cavity such as: bladder, rectum, and the reproductive system
Synovial Cavity A joint cavity that is a closed space between bones containing synovial fluid
Oral cavity Cavity/space inside the mouth including the lips
Nasal Cavity Space inside the nose
Orbital cavity Space in the head containing the eyes
Tympanic Cavity Middle ear which is a space inside the ears that contains the temporal bon/ear bone
