TermDefinition

Integumentary System Major Organs: Hair, Skin, Nails
Skeletal System Physiology: Provides framework the muscles use to cause movement, blood cells are formed within bones, stores minerals
Skeletal System Major Organs: Joints and Bones; Femor, Fibula, Carpal
Muscular System Physiology: Allows manipulation of the environment, locomotion (ability to move), facial expressions; maintains posture, produces heat
Muscular System Major Organs: Skeletal Muscles; Biceps, Triceps, Quads
Nervous System Physiology: Fast acting control system of the body, responds to internal and external changes by activating appropriate muscles and glands
Nervous System Major Organs: Brain, Nerves, Sensory Receptors, Spinal Cord
Endocrine System Physiology: Glands secrete hormones that regulate processes such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient use (metabolism) by body cells
Endocrine System Major Organs: Thyroid gland, thymus, Pineal gland, Pituitary gland, Adrenal gland, Pancreas, Ovary, Testis
Cardiovascular System Physiology: Blood vessels transport blood, which carries oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, wastes, etc; the heart pumps blood
Cardiovascular System Major Organs: Heart and Blood vessels; Veins, Arteries, Capillaries
Lymphatic System Physiology (Immunity): Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to blood; disposes of debris in the lymphatic stream; houses white blood cells (lymphocytes) involved in immunity; mounts attacks against foriegn substances in the body
Lymphatic System Major Organs: Red bone marrow, Thymus, Lymphatic vessels, Thoracic duct, Spleen, Lymph Nodes
Respiratory System Physiology: Keeps blood constantly supplied with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide; gaseous exchanges occur through walls of air sacs of the lungs
Respiratory System Major Organs: Nasal Cavity, Pharynx, Larynx, Lungs, Bronchus
Digestive System Physiology: Breaks down food into absorbable units; enter blood stream; distributed to body cells indigestable food "stuff" eliminated into feces
Digestive System Major Organs: Oral cavity, Esophagus, Liver, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Rectum, Anus
Urinary System Physiology: Eliminates nitrogenous wastes from the body; regulates water, electrolytes and acid-base balance in the blood
Urinary System Major Organs: Kidney, Ureter, Urinary Bladder, Urethra
Reproductive System Male Physiology: Function in production of offspring. Testes produce sperm; male sex hormone; ducts and glands aid in delivery of sperm to female reproductive tract
Reproductive System Female Physiology: Ovaries produce eggs and female sex hormones; other sites are for fertilization and development of fetus
Reproductive System Male Major Organs: Prostate Gland, Penis, Testis, Scrotum, Ductus Deferens
Reproductive System Female Major Organs: Mammary Glands (In breasts), Ovary, Uterus, Vagina, uterine tube
