U1 Anatomy Planes...

Orientation, Planes and Cavity

TermDefinition
Superior (Cranial): Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body above
Superior example: Head is superior to the abdomen
Inferior (Caudal): Away from the head end or toward the lower part of the structure; below
Inferior example: The naval is inferior to the chin
Anterior (Ventral): Towards or at the front of the body
Anterior example: The breastbone is anterior to the spine
Posterior (Dorsal): Towards or at the back of the body; behind
Posterior example: The heart is posterior to the breastbone
Medial: Toward or at the midline of the body; on the innerside
Medial example: The heart is medial the arm
Lateral: Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of
Lateral example: The arms are lateral to the chest
Intermediate: Between a more medial and a more lateral structure or just between
Intermediate example: The collarbone is intermediate to the breastbone and shoulder
Proximal: Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body
Proximal example: The elbow is proximal to the wrist
Distal: Farther form the origin of a body part or point of attachment
Distal example: The knee is distal to the thigh
Superficial (external): Toward or at the body surface
Superficial example: The skin is superficial to the skeletal system
Deep (internal): Away from the body surface; more internal
Deep example: The lungs are deep to the lungs
Frontal Plane: Front/ Back (divides body into anterior/ posterior parts) horizontal line
Median (midsagittal) Plane: Vertical plane divides body into right and left
Transversal Plane: Horizontal plane divides body into superior and inferior
Cranial Cavity: Contains the brain
Vertebral Cavity: Contains spinal Cord
Thoracic Cavity: Contains heart and lungs
Abdominal Cavity: Contains digestive viscera
Pelvic Cavity: Contains bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum
