Planes/directional

planes of the body and directional terms

TermDefinition
midsagittal (median) plane that cuts the body in half down the middle
frontal (coronal) plane that cuts the body in half between anterior and posterior
transverse plane that cuts the body between superior and inferior
anterior front of the body
posterior back of the body
medial towards the midline/midsagittal line
lateral away from the midline/midsagittal line
distal farther away from the center of the body; used to describe arms and legs
proximal closer towards the center of the body; used to describe arms and legs
superior towards the top of the body
inferior towards the bottom of the body
ventral synonym to anterior (front of the body)
dorsal synonym to posterior (back of the body)
superficial describes something on the surface of the body
deep describes something on the inside of the body
caudal synonym to inferior (bottom of the body)
anatomical position always assume the body is in this position 1- standing 2- face front 3- feet parallel 4- palms facing forward 5- arms at sides
