Connective Tissue
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Areolar CT | Fibroblast, mast cells, macrophages Contains: collage, CT, elastic fibers Location: beneath epithelium, between muscles, “lamina propria” of mucous membranes |
Adipose Tissue | “Fat” white large central vacuoles, thin peripheral cytoplasm- “signet cells” Function: storage of triglycerides (fat), cushion/insulation, energy reserve |
Reticular Tissue | Forms the stroma of various organs Contains: lymphocytes (WBC), reticular fibers Location: lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow Function: support |
Dense Regular CT | Collagenous fibers in the matrix, running parallel resulting in a tissue which can resist tension. Location: tendons (muscle to bone), ligaments (bone to bone) Function: support |
Dense Irregular CT | collagenous fibers are thicker and interwoven and arranged irregularly. Contains: elastic fiber Location: periosteum, heart valves |
Hyaline Cartilage | "Gristle" most abundant cartilage, appears transparent or glassy Contains: collagen elastic cartilage, chondrocytes in their lacunae Location: articular cartilage, costal cartilage, tip of the nose, embryonic skeleton, growth plate Function: support |
Fibrocartilage | Matrix is tough and flexible containing many collagenous fibers Location: intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, manubrium+ body of sternum, meniscus (only one that stains blue) |
Elastic Cartilage | Matrix has many elastic fibers increasing flexibility Contains: elastic fibers Location: external ear, epiglottis, eustachian (auditory tubes) |
Elastic Tissue | Large elastic arteries (Aorta) Contains: dark elastic fibers Function: support, stretch, recoil |
Blood | Only liquid CT Matrix= plasma, kidneys digestive system CT cells= WBC Fibers not visible in circulative blood |
Bone Tissue | Matrix hard and rigid because of the deposition of calcium salts. Osteon= functional unit of compact bone lacunae= small gaps in the bone cell Canaliculi= lines dividing within the ring Lamellae= layers of rings Central canal (Havarian canal) |
