Anatomy Week 1-7

TermDefinition
Axial skeleton composed of skull, vertebral column, ribs, sternum, hyoid bone, sacrum, and coccyx; protects vital organs
Appendicular skeleton bones of the limbs, shoulders, and pelvis, enables movement
Muscle tissue produces movement; produces most of the heat of the body
Epithelial tissue covers and protects the body surface; specializes in moving substances by secretion, excretion, and absorption; forms many glands
Connective tissue support the body and its parts, connect and hold them together, transport substances through the body, and protect from foreign invaders
Nervous tissue specializes in communication among the various parts of the body; major function is the generation of complex messages that coordinate the body functions
Proximal toward or nearest the trunk of the body; nearest the point of origin of a body part
Distal away from or farthest from the trunk or point of origin of a body part
Medial towards the midline of the body
Lateral toward the side of the body; away from its midline
Anterior/Ventral front or in front of; toward the belly
Posterior/Dorsal back or in back of; toward the back
Superior toward the head
Inferior toward the feet
Anatomical position body is in an erect, or standing, posture with the arms at the sides and palms forward; head and feet are also pointing forward
Supine position body is lying face upward
Prone position body is lying face downward
