QuestionAnswer
What is the basic unit of life? The Cell
What structure surrounds and protects the cell, regulating what enters and leaves? The cell membrane
Which organelle is known as the powerhouse of the cell? The mitochondrion
What is the role of the nucleus in a cell? The nucleus contains the cell’s DNA and controls its activities.
Which organelle is involved in modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins for secretion? The Golgi apparatus.
What is the jelly-like substance inside the cell that holds organelles in place? Cytoplasm.
What is the function of lysosomes? Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes to break down waste materials and cellular debris.
What structure provides support and shape to plant cells? The cell wall.
Which organelle is responsible for photosynthesis in plant cells? The Chloroplasts.
What is the function of ribosomes? Ribosomes are responsible for protein synthesis.
What is the role of the cytoskeleton? The cytoskeleton provides structural support for the cell and aids in cell movement and division.
What is the function of the nucleolus? The nucleolus is responsible for producing and assembling ribosome components.
What is the function of peroxisomes? Peroxisomes break down fatty acids and detoxify harmful substances.
What are plasmodesmata? Plasmodesmata are channels between plant cell walls that allow for transport and communication between cells.
What are centrioles and where are they found? Centrioles are involved in cell division and are found in animal cells.
What is the function of the plasma membrane? The plasma membrane regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)? The ER is involved in the synthesis of proteins (rough ER) and lipids (smooth ER).
What are vesicles and what do they do? Vesicles are small membrane-bound sacs that transport substances within the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
