Anatomy Terms and Definitions

TermDefinition
Anterior Also called ventral, this term refers to the front or front part of the body.
Posterior Also called dorsal, this term refers to the back or back part of the body.
Medial Refers to the center of the body, such as the sternum or navel.
Lateral Refers to away from the midline of the body, such as the abductors on the lateral aspect of the leg.
Superior Refers to toward the head or upper part of a structure.
Anatomical plane An imaginary plane that divides the body into equal or unequal parts, such as the sagittal, frontal, horizontal, and parasagittal planes.
Anatomical position The body is positioned upright, facing forward, with feet together and pointing forward, arms down at the side, and palms facing forward.
Anatomy The branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of humans, animals, and other living organisms, especially as revealed by dissection and the separation of parts.
Proximal Situated nearer to the center of the body or the point of attachment
musculoskeletal system the body's structural framework, made up of bones, muscles, joints, and connective tissues like tendons and ligaments
