TermDefinition
Aponeurosis broad, tendon-like sheet of connective tissue that attaches a skeletal muscle to another skeletal muscle or bone
Contractility ability to shorten (contract) forcibly. allows muscle tissue to pull on its attachment points and shorten with force
Elasticity Ability to stretch and rebound; recoil back to its original length sue to elastic fibers
Irritabiility ability to receive and respond to a stimulus
Extensibility ability to lengthen (extend); stretch or extend
Fascia fibrous tissue enclosing a muscle
Insertion end of skeletal muscle that is attached to the structure (usually a bone) that is moved when the muscle contracts
Multinucleated muscle cells that contain more than one nucleus
Myofilament Myosin and actin, parallel fibers within a sarcomere that created the I and A bands
Myoglobin allows for more efficient muscle contractions and less fatigue
Origin end of a skeletal muscle that is attached to another structure (usually a bone) in a fixed position
Perimysium connective tissue that bundles skeletal muscle fibers into fascicles within a skeletal muscle
Sarcolemma plasma membrane of a skeletal muscle fiber
Sarcomere repeating basis unit of skeletal muscle; composed of actin and myosin
Sarcoplasm cytoplasm of a muscle cell
Striated alignment of parallel actin and myosin filaments which form a banded pattern
Tendon dense connective tissue structure that anchors a muscle to a bone
Epimysium outer layer of connective tissue around skeletal muscle; allows a muscle to contract and move powerfully while maintaining its structural integrity
Endomysium loose connective tissue covering each muscle fiber in a skeletal muscle. contains extracellular fluid and nutrients to support the muscle fiber
