Term | Definition |

Exocrine | A gland that makes substances such as sweat, tears, saliva, milk, and digestive juices, and lets them out through a duct or opening to a body surface. |
salivary glands | exocrine glands that make, change and produce saliva into the oral cavity. |
Taste buds | small sensory organs that allow you to experience taste |
teeth | Bony structures in the gums of the upper and lower jaw that are covered with enamel and are used for chewing |
incisors | front teeth |
canine teeth | pointy teeth used to tear up food |
molars and premolars | teeth at the back of the mouth for grind food |
Enamel | hardest substance in your body and it provides a protective covering for the teeth. |
Involuntarily | when your body does an action without a person thinking about it |
Peristalsis: | the process by which the esophagus moves food to the stomach. These can be described as waves of muscle contraction, squeezing. |
Sphincter: | at the bottom of the esophagus opens to let food enter the stomach. controls how much food goes in or out |
esophagus | 25 centimeter long muscular tube that moves food from the throat to the stomach. |
stomach | the temporary “storage tank” for your food where acids begin to break down food into nutrients. |
Rugae | olds in the stomach lining |
Chyme | Partially digested food and acid mixture is called chyme. |
Pylorus | part of the stomach that connects to the duodenum (small intestine), a valve that opens and closes during digestion. |
liver | organ located in the upper abdomen that filters all of the blood in the body and breaks down toxic substances |
Toxic | poisonous or deadly |
Gallbladder | releases bile into the small intestine. |
Bile | a fluid that aids digestion, secreted in the liver, and stored in the gallbladder. |
small intestine | specialized pipe-like structure between the stomach and the large intestine |
duodenum | he first part of the small intestine immediately beyond the stomach |
jejunum | middle part of the small intestine |
ileum | final and longest piece of the small intestine |
large intestine | large tube like organ that is connected to the anus and the small intestine |
Caecum | start of large intestine, receives undigested food material from the small intestine. |
Colon | main part of the large intestine, which passes from the cecum to the rectum and absorbs water and electrolytes from food that has remained undigested. |
Rectum | final section of the large intestine before waste leaves the body |
Kidneys | help remove waste extra fluid. Controls production of red blood cells. Make vitamins that control growth. Releases hormones that help regulate blood pressure. |
Urinary system: | A system in your body that includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. |
Urinary Bladder: | collects and stores urine until you release it. |
ureters | two tubes that carry urine from your kidneys to your urinary bladder. |
Urethra | Urine leaves your body through |
