Lymphatic and immune system

QuestionAnswer
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system? To transport lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body.
What are lymph nodes? Small, bean-shaped structures that filter lymph and store white blood cells to help fight infection.
Name two primary lymphoid organs: The thymus and bone marrow.
What is the role of the spleen in the lymphatic system? It filters blood, removes old or damaged red blood cells, and helps fight infection.
What is lymph? A clear fluid that travels through the lymphatic system, carrying cells that help fight infections and other diseases.
What are the two main types of immunity in the immune system? Innate immunity and adaptive immunity.
What is the function of T cells in the immune system? T cells help protect the body from infection by attacking infected cells and activating other immune cells.
What is the role of B cells in the immune system? B cells produce antibodies that bind to specific antigens to neutralize or destroy pathogens.
What is an antigen? A substance that the immune system recognizes as foreign and that can provoke an immune response.
What is the function of the thymus? The thymus is where T cells mature and become capable of responding to pathogens.
How does the lymphatic system contribute to fat absorption? It absorbs fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system and transports them to the bloodstream.
What is the difference between innate and adaptive immunity? Innate immunity provides immediate, non-specific defense against pathogens, while adaptive immunity provides a specific response to pathogens and has memory.
What are macrophages? Large white blood cells that engulf and digest pathogens and cellular debris.
What is the role of the tonsils in the lymphatic system? The tonsils trap pathogens from the food and air we ingest and help activate the immune response.
What is the function of lymphatic vessels? They transport lymph throughout the body, returning it to the bloodstream and helping to maintain fluid balance.
