Anatomy- Upper Digestive System

Upper Digestive Tract Tongue, pharynx, esophagus, stomach
Parts of the Mouth lips, cheeks, hard/soft palate, tongue, tonsil, uvula, epiglottis, pharynx, salivary glands, teeth
Hard Palate four bones: two maxillae and two palatines
Soft Palate between the mouth and nasopharynx, a muscle arranged in the shape of an arch.
Fauces opening in the arch leads from the mouth into the oropharynx
Uvula Suspended from the midpoint of the posterior bor-der of the arch is a small cone-shaped process,
Parotid (salivary) Glands penetrate the buccinator muscle on each side and open into the mouth, produce a watery (or serous) type of saliva containing enzymes but not mucus
Submandibular (salivary) Glands located just below the mandibular angle, contain both serous (enzyme) and mucus-producing elements
Sublingual (salivary) Glands smallest, in front of the submandibular glands, under the mucous membrane covering the floor of the mouth, 8-20 ducts, produce only a mucous type of saliva
Tooth from Top to Bottom Cusp, Crown, Neck, Root
Tooth from Out to In Enamel (covers exposed), Cementum (covers root), Dentin (hard CT), Pulp (soft CT)
Pharynx swallowing/Deglutition, pushes food to esophagus in terminal portion
Esophagus collapsible, muscular, mucosa-lined tube from pharynx to stomach
Stomach esophagus-gastrointestinal opening, cardia, lesser (upper) and greater (lower) curvature, fundus (top), body, pylorus (bottom), pyloric sphincter, duodenal bulb, duodenum
Stomach from Out to In Serosa, longitudinal muscle, circular muscle, oblique muscle, submucosa, mucosa, rugae (ridges in)
