TermDefinition
Enzyme a protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the body.
Filtration the process of separating solutes and fluids through a porous membrane.
Metabolic pathways a series of chemical reactions that take place in cells to build and break down molecules for cellular processes.
Osmosis he movement of solvent molecules from high to low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
Hyperplasia an increase in the number of cells in an organ or tissue.
Benign a condition, tumor, or growth that is not cancerous.
Anaplasia a lack of differentiation of tissue cells.
Dysplasia a term used to describe the presence of abnormal cells within a tissue or organ.
Glycoproteins a type of conjugated protein with shorter, branched carbohydrate chains known as oligosaccharides.
Proteoglycans a class of glycoproteins of high molecular weight that are found especially in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue (the fibrous tissue that gives support to the body structure).
Epithelial tissue a type of body tissue that forms the covering on all internal and external surfaces of your body, lines body cavities and hollow organs and is the major tissue in glands.
Connective tissue tissue that supports, protects, and gives structure to other tissues and organs in the body.
Muscle tissue a soft tissue that allows the body to move and support organs.
3 types of muscle tissue cardiac, smooth, and skeletal.
Nervous tissue found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It is responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities.
Cuboidal cells A type of epithelial cell that is shaped like a square or cube. Cuboidal cells are found in the epithelium lining of the ducts such as those in the pancreas, and of glands such as the salivary gland.
Dendrites the receiving or input portions of a neuron.
