Standard Anatomical Position Facing forward; Feet flat; Arms out; Palms facing forward
Prone Lying on your stomach; often used for neck & spinal surgeries
Supine Lying on your back
Trendelenburg Tilted so head is lower than feet; Used for emergency treatment for hypotension or shock
Fowler's Position Sitting Position; 45 degree angle
Low Fowler's Sitting at 30 degree angle
High Fowler's Sitting at a 90 degree angle
Anterior Front of body; Opposite of Posterior
Ventral Front of body; Opposite of Dorsal
Posterior Back of body; Opposite of Anterior
Dorsal Back of body; Opposite of Ventral
Cranial Toward the head (skull)
Caudal Toward your tail end
Superior Above
Inferior Below
Medial Toward the middle
Lateral Toward the side
Bilateral Both sides
Proximal Closest to the point of attachment
Distal Farthest from the point of attachment
Superficial On the surface; Opposite of Deep
Deep Inside; Opposite of superficial
Sagittal Plane Cuts the body into Right & Left Side
Frontal Plane Cuts the body into Front & Back
Transverse Plane Cuts the body into Top & Bottom
Ventral Body Cavities Cavities on the front of the body: Thoracic, Abdominal, Pelvic, Abdominopelvic
Thoracic Cavity Chest: Heart, lungs, bronchi, trachea, esophagus, thymus
Abdominal Cavity Belly: stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, LI, SI, appendix
Pelvic Cavity Hip Region: Urinary Bladder, reproductive organs, rectum
Abdominopelvic Cavity Abdominal & Pelvic Cavities
Dorsal Body Cavities Cavities on the back of the body: Cranial & Spinal
Cranial Cavity Holds the brain
Spinal Cavity Hold the Spinal Cord
Abdominal Quadrants Abdominal area split into 4 parts using the belly button is the center
Right Upper Quadrant RUQ–liver, stomach, GB, Right kidney
Right Lower Quadrant RLQ–Appendix, Right ureter
Left Upper Quadrant LUQ–Liver, stomach, left kidney,
Left Lower Quadrant LLQ–left ureter
Abdominal Pelvic Regions Abdominal Area split into 9 regions with the belly button being in the center region
Hypochondriac Regions Right or Left, located on the top
Lumbar Regions Right or Left, located in the middle of either side
Iliac Regions Right or left, Located on the bottom
Epigastric Region In the middle on the top
Umbilical Region In the middle of the middle
Hypogastric Region In the middle on the bottom
