4.01 Lymphatic Sys.

NC Health Science I Lymphatic System

TermDefinition
Lymph Fluid Straw Colored, goes between capillary blood & Tissues; Helps with Fluid Balance
Lymphatic Vessels Carries Lymph fluid; Parallels veins; Flows in only one direction; Drains in larger lymphatic vessels
Thoracic Duct Largest Lymph Vessel, Drains from left upper body, & all of lower body
Drains lymph from right head, neck, chest and arm
Lymph Nodes Tiny oval shaped, located all over the body, produce lymphocytes, filters our harmful substances, can become inflammed
Tonsils Masses of lymphatic tissue that produces lymphocytes & filter bacteria; 3 sets=palatine, lingual, pharyngeal
Palatine Tonsils located in the back of the throat
Lingual Tonsils Located at the base of the tongue
Pharyngeal Tonsils AKA adenoids, located in the nasopharynx
Thymus Gland Produces lymphocytes, located in upper chest, anterior to the heart, most active during younger age
Spleen Located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, produces lymphocytes, filters blood, stores blood, destroys old RBCs
Fluid Balance Function of the Lymphatic System; fluid diffuses out of blood, enters lymphatic system with waste, vessels carry it back to the 2 big lymphatic vessels
Lymphocyte Production Function of the Lymphatic System; Lymphocytes travel through the lymphatic system, they are activated by viruses, bacteria or other substances, they respond by making antibodies
Filtration Function of the lymphatic System; Lymph nodes act as filters by detecting bacteria, viruses or other foreign substances
Immunity Function of the lymphatic system; The body's ability to resist disease; There are multiple types
Natural Immunity Immunity that you are born with; skin, eye lashes
Passive Acquired Immunity Antibodies are given to the patient
Naturally Acquired Immunity Patient gets the illness, recovers from illness, builds antibodies to illness
Artificially Acquired Immunity Patient gets the vaccine for illness, builds antibodies to illness
Anaphylactic Shock (severe allergic reaction) –overreaction of the immune system to allergen; –Coughing, wheezing, hives, trouble breathing, swollen throat; –Rx–EpiPen
Cancer –Abnormal growth of cells; –carcinoma, lymphoma, leukemia, sarcoma; –Tx–Surgery, chemo, radiation
HIV/AIDS –Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS); –pt could be positive without showing symptoms; –Tx–based on symptoms, Antiretroviral meds
Hodgkin's Disease –Lymphoma, lymphocytes begin to multiply; –Painless swelling of the lymph nodes; –Tx–Chemotherapy & radiation
Infectious mononucleosis –Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) passed through body fluids, especially saliva; –Fever, fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes; –Tx–Rest, fluids, medications for pain & swelling
Lymphedema –Too much lymph fluid, swelling, damaged or blocked lymphatic system; –Swelling usually in one extremity; –Tx–Compression devices, massages
Tonsilitis –Bacterial or viral infection, streptococcus ; –Throat pain, red tonsils, swollen glands in neck; –Tx–Antibiotics for bacterial; tonsilectomy
Autoimmune disorders –Body's immune system attacks itself; –Early s/s similar; individual dx have own symptoms; –Tx–no cure, medications can help with inflammation
Lupus erythematosus –Autoimmune disease; –fatigue, achy muscles, swelling; butterfly shape rash on face; –Tx–Anti–inflammatory drugs
