NC Health Science I Endocrine System

TermDefinition
Pituitary Gland Master Gland; Located @ base of brain; 2 Lobes–Anterior & Posterior
Thyroid Gland Butterfly shaped gland; Anterior side of larynx over trachea
Parathyroid Gland 4 glands, size of rice grains; posterior side of thyroid gland
Thymus Gland Located posterior to sternum; Both lymphatic & Endocrine; Large as a child, small as an adult
Adrenal Glands Located on top of each Kidney; Has a Cortex (outside) & Medulla (inside)
Gonads Sex Glands
Testes Male Sex Gland; Located in the scrotum
Ovaries Female Sex Gland; Located in the lower abdomen/pelvis
Pancreas Located posterior to stomach; Both Endocrine & Digestive; Endocrine=Islets of Langerhans
Glands secrete hormones
Hormones Chemicals substances made by glands that regulate body functions
Target Organ/Cells Tissue/Organ that the hormones affect
Negative Feedback Hormone level is low, hormone is released, when hormone level is normal, hormone released is stopped
Nervous Control Sympathetic Nervous directs release of hormone
ACTH or Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Made in Anterior Pituitary Lobe; Stimulates Adrenal Cortex
FHS or Follicle–Stimulating Hormone Made in Anterior Pituitary Lobe; Stimulates production of estrogen in females & sperm in males
LH or Luteinizing Hormone Made in Anterior Pituitary Lobe; Stimulates ovulation in ovaries
GH or Growth Hormone Made in Anterior Pituitary Lobe; Growth & Development
Prolactin Made in Anterior Pituitary Lobe; Develops Breast Tissue & Milk production after child birth
TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Made in Anterior Pituitary Lobe; Stimulates the Thyroid
Vasopressin Made in Posterior Pituitary Lobe; Converts to AHD (antidiuretic hormone)
Oxytocin Made in Posterior Pituitary Lobe; Uterine Contractions
Thyroxine Made in Thyroid Gland; Controls rate of metabolism
Calcitonin Made in Thyroid Gland; Prevents Hypercalcemia
Parathormone Made in Parathyroid Gland; Controls blood calcium level, prevent hypocalcemia
Epinephrine Made in Adrenal Medulla; Stress hormone, fight or flight
Norepinephrine Made in Adrenal Medulla; Mobilizes brain & body for action, also a stress hormone
Androgens Made in Adrenal Cortex; Male sex hormones
Corticosteroids Made in Adrenal Cortex; Anti–inflammatory hormones
Estrogen Made in Ovary; Develop female reproductive organs; Secondary sex characteristics
Progesterone Made in Ovary; Menstrual Cycle
Testosterone Made in Testes; Male reproductive organs & Secondary sex characteristics
Insulin Made in Pancreas; Carbohydrate metabolism; Maintain blood sugar level
Acromegaly Too much growth hormone from Pit. Gland later in life; Enlargement of the extremities; Rx–Meds to inhibit growth hormone production, radiation
Addison's disease Underproduction of cortisol & aldosterone from the adrenal glands; S/S–weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, low BP; Rx–replace hormones orally
Cushing's disease Too much ACTH from Pit. Gland, sometimes caused by taking too much glucocorticoid hormones for disorders; S/S–Upper body obesity, rounded face; Rx–lower the levels of cortisol
Diabetes Mellitus Type I: insulin dependent No insulin is made in the pancreas; S/S–polyuria, polydipsia, hypo/hyperglycemia; Rx–Insulin, FSBS, treat symptoms
Diabetes Mellitus Type II: non–insulin dependent Not enough insulin is made in the pancreas; S/S–hypo/hyperglycemia; Tx–oral medications, diet, exercise, insulin
Gigantism Too much growth hormone from pit. gland as a young age; S/S–overgrowth of long bones; Rx–surgery, medications, radiation
Growth Hormone Deficiency Underproduction of growth hormone from pit. gland; S/S–shorter children; Rx–Growth Hormone
Hyperthyroidism Too Much thyroxine, enlargement of thyroid gland; S/S–losing weight, goiter, exophthalmos; Rx–thyroid removal, medications, radiation
Hypothyroidism Too little thyroxine from thyroid gland; S/S–dry & itchy skin, dry & brittle hair, constipation, slow metabolism; Rx–Medications, dietary changes
Tetany Too little parathormone produced by parathyroid gland, or removal of parathyroid gland; S/S–convulsions, respiratory distress; Rx–vitamin D, calcium, parathormone

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
