1st semester literary terms

What is Alliteration? Same consonant at beginning of each syllable of a verse in two or more neighboring words
What is Allusion? Reference to an event in history which can be a famous person, place, or event
What is Antagonist? Character that opposes the main character in a story
What is Diction? Way in which something is expressed in words; writer's choice of words
What is Dramatic Irony? Audience knows something the characters do not; contradiction between what character thinks and what reader knows to be true
What is Dynamic Character? Character that grows and changes; individuals that evolve from experiences and grow emotionally
What us External Conflict? Character that struggles against another character or an outside force
What is First Person Point Of View? Narrator is protagonist, tells story from his perspective; part of the action
What is Flat Character? One-sided character and is stereotyped; one outstanding trait
What is Foreshadowing? Clues/hints suggest what will happen
What is Hyperbole? Extravagant exaggeration; bold statement adding emphasis without truth
What is Imagery? Language that appeals to senses or creates pictures
What is Internal Conflict? character struggle in making a decision; man vs. himself
What is Irony Of Situation? Events opposite from what is expected
What is Metaphor? Comparison of unlike thinks without using like or as
What is Mood? How story makes you feel
What is Oxymoron? Two contradictory words; contradictory combination of expressions
What is Paradox? Contradictory notion that is true; says opposite things but may be true
What is Parallelism? Repetition of series of words, phrases, or sentences with similar grammatical form
What is Personification? Giving human qualities to animals, objects, or ideas
What is Protagonist? Principal character or good guy; hero or leading character
What is Repetition? Repeating sounds, words, phrases, lines, or stanzas in a piece of writing
What is Round Character? Complex or multi-dimensional character; fully-developed and shows good and bad traits
What is Setting? Where, when, date, time, and location story takes place
What is Simile? Comparison between two unlike things using like or as
What is Static Character? Character doesn't change throughout story; simple
What is Symbol? Object, image, or action that stands for something more than literal meaning
What is Theme? Basic meaning of author; central message or insight into life
What is Third Person Point Of View? Events told by voice outside of story; narrator is not a character
What is Tone? Author's attitude or feeling about what's written; attitude conveyed by language and rhythm toward subject
