Prostate Gland | a gland in male mammals surrounding the urethra at the base of the bladder that controls release of urine from the bladder and secretes a fluid which is a major constituent of semen |
Gamete | male or female sex cell; sperm or egg |
Zygote | the fertilized ovum; produced by union of two gametes |
Gonad | organs producing gametes; ovaries or testes |
Seminiferous Tubule | highly convoluted tubes within the testes that form sperm |
Germ Cell | a sexual reproductive cell; gamete; one of the diploid cells in the reproductive organs of a multicellular organism that undergo division and are the precursors of haploid gametes |
Sustentacular Cell | one of the supporting cells of an epithelial membrane or tissue |
Spermatic Cord | a cordlike structure, consisting of the vas deferens and its accompanying arteries, veins, nerves, and lymphatic vessels, that passes from the abdominal cavity through the inguinal canal down into the scrotum to the back of the testicle |
Epididymis | that portion of the male duct system in which sperm mature; empties into the ductus, or vas, deferens |
Seminal Vesicles | either of a pair of pouchlike glands situated on each side of the male urinary bladder that secrete seminal fluid and nourish and promote the movement of spermatozoa through the urethra |
Trabecula | any of the supporting strands of connective tissue projecting into an organ and constituting part of the framework of that organ |
Spermatogenesis | the process of sperm production in the male; involves meiosis |
Semen | fluid mixture produced by male reproductive structures; contains sperm, nutrients, and mucus |
Ovary | the female sex organ in which ova (eggs) are produced |
Uterus | a hollow muscular organ located in the pelvic cavity of female mammals in which the fertilized egg implants and develops; also called the womb |
Vagina | the tube-shaped part of the reproductive tract in female mammals that is connected to the cervix of uterus at one end and opens to the vulva on the other end; the fully developed fetus passes through this during birth |

FSH | follicle stimulating hormone; a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary that stimulates ovarian follicle production in females and sperm production |
LH | luteinizing hormone; an anterior pituitary hormone that aids maturation of cells in the ovary and triggers ovulation; also causes the interstitial cells of the testis to produce testosterone |
Follicle | (1) structure in an ovary consisting of a developing egg surounded by follicle cells; (2) colloid-containing structure in the thyroid gland |
Uterine Tube | the oviduct; the tube through which the ovum is transported to the uterus; also called the fallopian tube; conducts the egg from the ovary to the uterus |
Cervix of Uterus | a neck-shaped anatomical structure of the lower end of the uterus that extends into the vagina |
Menopause | the physiological end of menstrual cycles |
Oogenesis | the process of formation of the ova |
Ovulation | the release of an ovum (or oocyte) from the ovary |
Gestation | the period of development in the uterus from conception until birth; pregnancy |
Dilation | the widening or stretching of an opening or a hollow structure in the body |
Effacement | shortening of the uterine cervix and thinning of its walls as it is dilated during labor |
Colostrum | the thin yellowish fluid secreted by the mammary glands at the time of parturition that is rich in antibodies and minerals, and precedes the production of true milk; also called foremilk |
Vas deferens | or ductus deferens (carrying away); the main duct through which semen is carried from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct |
